Tablet computers like the Apple iPad are gaining more and more market share. And let’s face it: They’re convenient and fun to use. Sitting in front of the TV with a tablet is much easier than parking a notebook computer in your lap.
But are they green? Tablets can certainly consume less energy than PCs and laptops. Their greenest benefit may be consolidating several functions: game player, book reader, contact manager, home controller, music player, video player.
But are tablets replacing these other electronics and personal computers yet—or are they additional items in our electronic arsenals to be charged and recharged and later discarded? And, of course, how are they made and how will they be recycled?
